Suzuki Motor Corporation introduced the all-new WagonR and WagonR Stingray minicars in Japan. The all-new WagonR and WagonR Stingray have been designed to provide much roomier cabin space.
The minicar or miniwagon as Suzuki calls it, comes in three main variants – the Hybrid FX, Hybrid FZ, and the Stingray T. The new WagonR adopts a complete van-like design on the outside with boxy shape and a short-flat front overhang. The B-pillars, headlights and bumper-mounted tail lamps add more to the van like look. The Stingray on the other hand gets different set of projector headlamps, tail lamps, grille, bumper design, and subtle chrome garnishing. Overall, the Stingray sports a high-gloss finish.
Engine and Performance:
The cat is powered by a 660cc three-cylinder petrol engine that churns out 51 bhp and develops 60 Nm of peak torque. The hybrid variants get a motor that produces 3.1 bhp and 50 Nm of torque. Similarly, the Stingray also comes in three variants with one standard L variant and two hybrids, Hybrid T, Hybrid X variant. That said, in the Stingray, the motor churns out 65 bhp and develops 98 Nm of peak torque. All variants come with a CVT unit as standard and with the option of 2WD or 4WD option.
HYBRID variants are installed with mild hybrid system that lets the vehicle drive exclusive on motor when it starts moving. It is the most fuel-efficient miniwagon in Japan at 33.4km/L because of the combination of a light and rigid new-generation platform “HEARTECT”.
As for safety, it is featured with Dual Sensor Brake Support (DSBS) collision-mitigating system that features a monocular camera and laser sensor to detect pedestrian and vehicle ahead, and high beam assist that automatically switches high and low beam according to the vehicle’s surroundings.
Head-up display placed at a dashboard in front of the driver’s seat, it displays vehicle speed, DSBS warnings, etc., fulfilling advanced safety features. Head-up display has been adopted for the first time on a minicar.
User-friendliness has been enhanced such as with luggage room that enables easier loading of large luggage by stretching the luggage opening width and newly-adopted umbrella holders on the inside of both rear doors.
WagonR had newly established the miniwagon market since its launch in September 1993. Its sales in the Japanese domestic market has accumulated to approximately 4.4 million units. It is the model that represents minicars in Japan.
